Cleaning the roof of your home or commercial building carries a large degree of risk due to the height of the roof above the ground, as well as the pitch, or angle, the roof has. When selecting a roof cleaning contractor, there are many Safe and Proper Roof Cleaning Procedures and variables that come into play. Here are just a few of the basic safety guidelines and precautions to remember. As you evaluate cleaning contractors, examine their website and talk them personally about whether they follow these safety guidelines.
First and foremost, we DO NOT use a pressure washer for roof cleaning because doing so can void the manufacturer’s warranty. Pressure washing causes irreversible damage to the roof, which is why we use a soft wash technique for roof cleaning. We use a bleach based cleaning detergent, endorsed by roofing manufacturers. It is important to use eye protection, rubber gloves and other protective gear when handling any concentration of bleach. In addition, we apply protective covering for plants and are careful to avoid contact of bleach with other parts of the building.
For safety reasons, we spray the cleaning solution from a ladder to minimize walking on the roof as much as possible. When we must walk on the roof, we use specially designed shoes. This protects the roof and is the safest approach for our technicians. We never scrub the roof surface. Our technicians have a mind set and eyes open for safety issues from the moment they begin until they are off the job site.
We always wear slip resistant shoes to provide the greatest traction when walking on slippery roof surfaces. We plan out our cleaning approach by dividing the roof into sections and cleaning one section at a time, which increases our ability to work on dry areas. We also stand and walk on parts that are the flattest, which helps keep our weight evenly distributed and prevent injuries from slips and falls. Even our clothing is chosen to provide maximum cover from the sun, with ample breathing and ventilation potential to keep cool and not restrict or hinder our movement. We, of course, leave the jewelry off to minimize distractions while working.
These are just a few of the Safe and Proper Roof Cleaning Procedures that we adhere to, but these are just some of the basic and most important ones that you would want to observe in any pressure washing and roof cleaning contractor you choose.
